The name 'De Gaper' is inextricably linked to Dutch pharmaceutical history. A 'gaper' is a stone or wooden head (often with an open mouth and a pill on the tongue) that served as a sign for apothecaries and drugstores in the Netherlands from the 16th century onwards. It symbolized the taking of medicines. Scales with this specific inscription were produced specifically for this sector or bore the name as a mark of quality for medicinal measurements.
