Description

Lignum vitae.
Lawn bowls, 13 in total.
Taylor-Rolph Co. Ltd., London.
Four lawn bowls, signed 'Hopkins' (possibly for Obediah Hopkins (1879-1955), Welsh international lawn bowler?).
Jacques & Son, London.
Two lawn bowls.
Thomas Royle, Manchester.
Four mini lawn bowls (D: 5 cm).
Three lawn bowls, unmarked.
Two pairs of turned wooden stands or cups (H: 18 cm / H: 20 cm).
'Bowls' is a traditional sport from England. It is a precision sport in which the aim is for players to roll balls, called bowls, as close as possible to a smaller target ball. An important difference from jeu de boules is that in bowls the player rolls the ball from the start, whereas in jeu de boules the boules are thrown through the air in an arc during the first game.
