(Our Lady of Grace of Scheut), 17th century
Pilgrimage (devotional) engraving, etching and burin on linters paper
Reprint from the 18th or 19th century

from the 15th century onwards.
Good condition (minor stains, restored corner)
Image area: 9.4 × 6 cm
Plate: 18 × 12 cm
Background: The scene depicts a statue of the Virgin and Child appearing in a shrine (a small oratory that opens like an altarpiece). The statue appears to be resting on a tree trunk, which alludes
to the legendary founding of the sanctuary of Our Lady of Grace: According to tradition, a miraculous image of the Virgin is said to have been found in a hollow tree or affixed to a tree trunk, giving
rise to the pilgrimage. At the bottom, various figures are praying or prostrating themselves, some in a supplicating posture or afflicted with infirmity.
