Description
Justin Sanson (1833–1910)
Bronze with a brown patina depicting a dancer with a tambourine (often identified as a faun, a satyr or an ancient dancer). A shameless young man, depicted in a dynamic dance pose (in contrapposto), with his left foot raised on its tip. He holds a tambourine with both hands above his left shoulder.
Clothing and attributes: he is girded at the waist with a draped pezonium, lined with a meticulously sculpted lion’s skin, the roaring head of which appears on his right thigh.
Sculptor: Justin-Chrysostome Sanson (1833–1910), a renowned French sculptor and winner of the Grand Prix de Rome in 1861.
Signature: The bronze bears the signature engraved on the plinth: ‘J. Sanson’ followed by the inscription ‘ROMA’, indicating that it was created during his academic stay at the Villa Medici in Rome (second half of the 19th century).
Patina and base: Bronze with a very nuanced dark patina (brown/black).
