Description
Janis Straupe (born 1962)
Sculptural wardrobe or study cabinet known as
‘The Beetle’
One-off piece
Solid alder and brass
The artist’s monogram engraved on the inside and
signed and dated on a label inside.
Designed in 1982
H 220×W 180×D 80cm
Note: The artist specifically describes ‘The Beetle’
as the metamorphosis of a cabinet into a
giant insect, featuring various functions and
hiding places.
The front of the piece features a carved beetle,
inspired by a forest beetle, the dung beetle
(Geotrupes stercorosus).
The original specimen was discovered in a
coastal forest in Latvia and examined under a microscope at
16× magnification.
The beetle is depicted moving
across the sand on a beach. The corners of the cabinet
feature elements reminiscent of columns,
adorned with wood carvings depicting plants
and dune grasses, whilst a shell motif
adorns the upper section.
The cabinet is laid out as follows:
Eleven drawers, a stationery compartment, a
wine compartment, document compartments, shelves and two
concealed compartments.
All the wooden joints are made by
hand, without the use of tools or screws.
