EROTIC PORCELAIN SECRET BOX, CHINOISERIE STYLE, LATE 19TH–EARLY 20TH CENTURY Europe, probably Paris, in the style of Edmé Samson Mark: monogram painted in blue, concealed beneath the base. An oblong porcelain box with curved contours, mounted on blackened patinated metal decorated with a twisted frieze, opening via a hinge and a push-button clasp adorned with a foliage motif. The exterior decoration, painted in polychrome enamels and gold in a trompe-l’œil style, features on the lid a figure seated by the water’s edge, amongst reeds and palm trees, in a Far Eastern-inspired style, above a continuous frieze of orange-coloured geometric volutes and spirals. The interior reveals an erotic scene painted in polychrome enamels on the reverse of the lid, depicting a nude couple reclining on a green mat. The inner bowl bears a calligraphic inscription in red, imitating Asian characters. 5 × 7 cm.
