Description
ART NOUVEAU / AESTHETIC MOVEMENT PAIR OF BLOWN GLASS VASES, CIRCA 1880–1900
A pair of multi-layered blown glass vases (often referred to as double-layered or sheathed glass). The exterior is a rich, brilliant turquoise/azure blue, whilst the interior is lined with a layer of white opaline visible at the upper rim. The neck features a complex, star-shaped lobed form (or scalloped neck with ridges) inspired by organic floral forms (such as a blossoming flower bud). The sides are adorned with a hand-painted design in polychrome enamels in slight relief. The design depicts large striped lilies (or white lilies) with petals in shades of pink and white, dotted with red, accompanied by supple, sinuous stems and small golden inflorescences at the base.
Fine gold gilding, applied with a sponge or in small textured flecks, highlights all the lobes of the neckline as well as the botanical details, beautifully catching the light.
The small gold mark or handwritten number on the reverse corresponds to the workshop or designer’s marks often used in French manufacturers such as the Saint-Denis crystal works (François-Théodore Legras / Mont Joye)
H. 34 cm
