Domenichino (attributed to) – Hilly landscape with a fortified village and figures brown ink on laid paper 215 x 147 mm The sheet depicts a sweeping hilly landscape dominated, in the background, by a complex of fortified buildings, whilst a number of tiny figures bring the foreground to life. The composition unfolds across a succession of sloping planes, constructed using fine parallel and undulating lines that define the contours of the land and gradually draw the eye towards the village in the distance.The composition of the landscape, the concise rendering of the vegetation and, above all, the relationship between architecture, nature and the small figurative elements find significant parallels with the graphic work of Domenico Zampieri, known as Domenichino, in which the landscape often takes on an orderly and rigorously calibrated structure.Particularly characteristic is the treatment of the vegetation, rendered as compact masses with rounded contours, alternating with the broad expanses of the ground marked by sequences of parallel lines. The construction of the architectural elements is similar: they are outlined with a fine, analytical pen yet harmoniously integrated into the landscape. Even the small figures, swiftly defined with just a few essential strokes, find parallels in the Bolognese master’s graphic practice.The sheet thus forms part of the tradition of the classicist landscape that developed in Rome during the early decades of the 17th century within the Carracci circle, of which Domenichino was one of the leading figures, having developed a personal conception of the landscape based on the balance between natural observation and the ideal construction of space.Inscription in pencil on the front: ‘Caracci’; and inscription in pencil on the reverse: ‘Domenichino’.
