Correggio (follower of) – Apollo oil on canvas 45 x 62 cm The painting depicts the young Apollo, god of music and poetry, seated upon the clouds and recognisable by the lyre he holds in his left hand. To his right, a cherub, partially draped in a pinkish cloth, holds aloft a branch or a laurel wreath – an attribute traditionally associated with the deity following the metamorphosis of Daphne and, more generally, a symbol of poetic glory.The composition shows clear links with the figurative art that developed in Parma around Antonio Allegri, known as Correggio, particularly in the depiction of the figure seen in a bold foreshortened perspective, in the arrangement of the bodies against billowing masses of clouds, and in the pursuit of continuous movement achieved through the twisting of the limbs and the sweeping drapery.Apollo’s position is particularly significant: his torso turned towards the viewer, one leg advanced with the foot strongly foreshortened, and his face turned upwards create a view intended to be observed, ideally, from below, following conventions that find their most famous precedent in the great fresco cycles executed by Correggio in Parma, from the dome of the church of San Giovanni Evangelista to the monumental decoration of the cathedral’s dome.
