Black Madonna, Venetian School, late 16th – early 17th century, oil on canvas, 125 x 94 cm The composition depicts the crowned Virgin and Child within an architectural niche framed by columns and surmounted by a round arch. The composition, which has a powerful devotional impact, is characterised by the monumental rendering of the figure, emphasised by the dark background and an intense chiaroscuro effect that focuses the light on the Virgin’s drapery, rendered with broad strokes of red and blue.The Virgin’s darkened face and complexion refer to the established iconography of the Black Madonna, an object of particular veneration between the 16th and 17th centuries.The work appears to be rooted in the Venetian figurative tradition of the late 16th century, when the artistic language of Tintoretto and his circle profoundly influenced sacred art intended for both churches and private devotion. The verticality of the composition, the strong contrast in lighting and the concise architectural definition indeed recall approaches widespread in the Venetian art scene of the late sixteenth century.Particularly significant is the treatment of the robes, rendered through broad, luminous areas of colour and broken folds, which share interesting points of contact with certain works by Palma the Younger, especially in his devotional output.
