St Jerome, Neapolitan School, 17th century, oil on canvas, 101 x 61 cm The painting depicts St Jerome as a penitent, shown in half-length in a meditative pose, with a bare torso, a long beard and a pensive gaze. The saint clutches the crucifix, whilst the skull placed to his right alludes to the transience of life and meditation on death. The work appears consistent with the output of Pasquale Chiesa, a painter of Genoese origin who was active mainly in Rome around the mid-17th century. The figure’s strong naturalism, the pronounced chiaroscuro, the vigorous anatomical construction and the warm, earthy colour palette evoke the Ribera-esque and sombre quality that characterises a significant part of his oeuvre. Particularly significant is the comparison with Pasquale Chiesa’s *Penitent Saint Jerome*, held in the Doria Pamphilj Gallery, dated to around 1648–1650, which forms part of the group of works commissioned by the Pamphilj family.The figure emerges powerfully from the dark background through light concentrated on the torso, face and hands, whilst the red drapery and the white loincloth introduce carefully balanced chromatic accents. The result is an image of intense spirituality, in which the theme of penance is interpreted through a austere and strongly naturalistic style, typical of Roman and Neapolitan culture in the mid-17th century.The work thus constitutes an interesting example of the religious output of Pasquale Chiesa, an artist capable of combining the Ligurian pictorial tradition with influences from Ribera and with the naturalism that developed in Rome during the mid-17th century.
