The Guercino (workshop of) – The Return of the Prodigal Son, oil on canvas, 163 x 147 cm The painting follows almost exactly the composition of *The Return of the Prodigal Son* painted by Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, known as Guercino, in 1654, now in the collection of the Timken Museum of Art in San Diego.The scene depicts the climax of the Gospel parable: the father welcomes his repentant son, who is still partly undressed and wiping away his tears, whilst behind them a servant lifts the curtain, revealing the landscape beyond. The intense relationship between the figures, created through a sequence of gestures and restrained glances, focuses the episode on the emotional dimension of the encounter.This painting follows Guercino’s original with great fidelity, both in its overall composition and in the arrangement of the figures, the colour relationships and the details of the clothing. The format, slightly larger than the example now in San Diego, and certain differences in execution suggest that this is a replica produced within the master’s workshop, most likely in close contact with the original model. The quality of certain passages, particularly in the figure of the young man, the luminous rendering of the flesh tones and the ample red drapery of the father, attests to a direct influence from Guercino’s mature style, characterised in the 1650s by greater formal restraint, a clearer colour palette and a measured narrative sensibility.
