The colour palette, dominated by browns, ochres and deep reds, is enlivened by the luminous highlights on the figures’ complexions, their garments and the angelic figures.Particularly significant is the rendering of the faces, characterised by intense psychological depth: Joseph’s pallor, the Virgin’s pensive expression and Christ’s restrained gesture lend the composition an intimate, domestic quality, far removed from any narrative emphasis.
