The painting is based, albeit with some variations, on Peter Paul Rubens’s composition depicting Samson and Delilah, painted around 1609 and now in the collection of the Cincinnati Art Museum (inv. 1972.459).The scene depicts the Old Testament episode of Samson’s betrayal: the hero, asleep on Delilah’s lap, is stripped of his strength when his hair is cut, whilst the Philistines wait to capture him. The composition retains the highly theatrical arrangement of Rubens’s original, built upon the tightly grouped figures, the stark chiaroscuro contrasts and the narrative tension of the moment immediately preceding his capture. Framed.
