Giovanni Andrea Ferrari – Lot and his daughters oil on canvas 138 x 115 cm The painting depicts the Old Testament episode of Lot and his daughters (Genesis 19:30–38). At the centre of the composition, Lot, already overcome by wine, holds out a cup whilst one of his daughters pours the drink from a lavish golden jug; the second, seated beside her father, affectionately wraps her arms around his shoulders. In the foreground, further metal vessels arranged upon a white cloth take on almost the quality of a still life, contributing to the material and chromatic richness of the scene.The work fits squarely within the Genoese painting tradition of the first half of the 17th century and shows significant affinities with the work of Giovanni Andrea de Ferrari, a leading figure—alongside Bernardo Strozzi and Gioacchino Assereto—of the Ligurian naturalist movement. The close grouping of the figures, which occupy almost the entire pictorial space, the pronounced chiaroscuro and the strong psychological characterisation of the figures are accompanied by a soft painterly texture and a colour palette dominated by reds, browns and luminous whites.The figure of Lot is particularly well rendered, with his vivid complexion, his wine-heavy gaze and his vigorous grey beard, whilst the two young women are characterised by more delicate modelling and a restrained yet evident sensuality. The contrast between the different facial features and the attention paid to the metal objects in the foreground are recurring elements in De Ferrari’s painting, in which naturalistic detail is often accompanied by a refined chromatic sensibility.
