Angelo Caroselli – Erminia amongst the shepherds oil on canvas 99 x 118 cm The painting depicts the famous episode from Torquato Tasso’s *Jerusalem Delivered* in which Erminia, having fled Jerusalem whilst wearing Clorinda’s armour, finds refuge with a family of shepherds.The princess appears on the left, still in armour, whilst in the centre an elderly shepherd addresses her with an eloquent gesture; on the right, young figures and animals complete the rural setting. The composition effectively highlights the contrast between Erminia’s chivalric demeanour and the simplicity of pastoral life. The work displays characteristics fully consistent with Angelo Caroselli’s oeuvre, particularly in its brown palette, strong chiaroscuro contrasts and the marked characterisation of the figures. The naturalistic rendering of the old shepherd and the children, set against the elegance of the protagonist, clearly reflects the eclectic and personal style of the Roman artist, who was able to blend Caravaggesque influences with a narrative sensibility.The painting thus constitutes a refined 17th-century interpretation of Tasso’s subject, characterised by intense luminosity and a successfully rendered pastoral atmosphere.
