Portrait of a Gentleman, Northern Italian School, 17th century, oil on canvas, 87 x 73 cm The painting depicts a gentleman in half-length portrait, dressed in black and adorned with a wide white collar, in a style of portraiture that was widespread in Northern Italy around the mid-17th century. The simplicity of his attire draws the eye to his face, rendered with remarkable naturalistic detail, and to his hand, depicted with precision and elegantly set against the dark background of his garment.The work appears to be attributable to the 17th-century Ligurian painting tradition, with interesting parallels with the circle of Domenico Fiasella. Particularly significant is the physical resemblance to the figure traditionally identified as a self-portrait of Fiasella, depicted amongst the onlookers in the *Vestition of Saint Clare* of 1648, now housed at the Diocesan Museum of Sarzana.The elongated shape of the face, the grey hair falling to either side, the prominent nose, the moustache and the characteristic goatee do indeed show a striking resemblance to the painter’s face in the Sarzana altarpiece. Although it does not, at present, allow us to identify the portrayed figure with certainty, this comparison is of particular interest and reinforces the painting’s place within the Ligurian figurative tradition of the mid-17th century, closely associated with Fiasella’s circle.
