*Cavalier Tempesta* (attributed to) – *Sea Storm with Shipwreck* Oil on canvas, 77 x 93 cm A scene of a shipwreck set along a rocky coastline, dominated by a stormy sea and a sky laden with dark clouds. A small boat, tossed about by the waves, is dangerously close to the rocks, whilst in the foreground a human figure, probably a shipwreck survivor, lies on the shore in a posture of exhaustion or supplication.The composition is structured around dynamic diagonals that guide the eye from the churning sea towards the mainland, accentuating the sense of instability and danger. The contrast between the dark masses of the waves and the flashes of light amongst the clouds helps to create a powerful dramatic effect, typical of Baroque painting.The work reflects Pieter Mulier the Younger’s interest in the spectacular depiction of nature, in which the sea takes centre stage. The human presence, reduced and marginal, emphasises man’s vulnerability in the face of the uncontrollable force of the elements. Framed in the 20th century.
