Portrait of a Man in Traditional Costume; Italian School, first half of the 19th century; oil on canvas, 93 x 70 cm The painting, of remarkable technical quality, depicts a young man in half-length portrait, captured in a natural and intensely engaged pose, with his gaze turned to one side. The facial characterisation is particularly striking: the face, modelled through soft brushwork yet with meticulous attention to the play of light, reveals a keen ability to observe from life, evident in the rendering of the complexion, the moist gaze and the definition of the hair and moustache.The depiction of the clothing is also highly effective, achieved through warm and refined colour combinations: the bright red of the waistcoat stands out strongly against the range of browns in the cloak and the background, whilst the fur trim and the white shirt help to enliven the pictorial surface.
