Provenance: R. S. Johnson Fine Arts, Chicago
In Hungary, snow usually falls in January and February. Thick fog often sets in, giving Szentendre a mysterious air, as if the town were floating on the Danube.
Situated at a latitude of 47.7° north, Szentendre is considerably further north than Sapporo in Japan, which lies at 43° north. From December to February, maximum temperatures remain below 5 °C and minimum temperatures fall below 0 °C. However, as rainfall is rare, the snow covers the ground only in a thin layer, as in this painting.
The top of a fence in the foreground suggests that Czóbel painted this scene from the window of a room on the upper floor. The snow covering the roofs and the ground creates a magnificent contrast with the rest of the landscape, revealing another side to Szentendre. One can almost feel the chill of this winter on the canvas.
