From 1920 to 1929, Paris became a gathering place for people from all over the world, who came there to forget the hardships of the First World War and celebrate peace. This movement gave rise to the ‘Roaring Twenties’.
At that time, artists such as Picasso, Modigliani, Chagall and Tsuguharu Foujita were very active. The avant-garde, surrealism, Art Deco and jazz were flourishing, creating a massive wave that laid the foundations of modern European culture.
After the outbreak of the First World War, Czóbel left Paris for Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. In 1925, he returned to Hungary, and until 1940 he travelled between Paris and Budapest.
During the 1920s, Czóbel’s works were characterised by thick, dark outlines and deep, sombre tones.
In this work, the vivid colours of the background blend harmoniously into a more subdued composition. Although the woman’s face is indistinct and in shadow, the light on her skin makes her stand out with astonishing sensuality and freshness.
