Béla CZÓBEL (Budapest 1883–1976) Portrait of a Woman with a Blue Ribbon Circa 1958 Oil on canvas 65 x 40 cm Signed top right ‘Czobel’ On the back of the frame, a label from Johnson Fine Art in Chicago, inventory number 5937 This lot is being presented as a temporary import. This lot will be sold under the standard VAT regime (at a rate of 5.5 per cent of the total price). The blue ribbon in her hair, the double red necklace and the young woman’s white tank top evoke femininity and the summer season. The soft contours of the figure lend this work a soothing atmosphere. From the 1950s onwards, Czóbel established her unique style and worked with boundless energy, earning her the recognition of her peers. In 1952, his friend Braque sent him a letter, and in 1956, Picasso wrote to him to express their admiration for his works. Furthermore, in 1958, he was awarded the title of Artist Emeritus of the People’s Republic of Hungary, an honour bestowed upon Hungarian artists for their outstanding achievements. Excerpt from the letter of 26 October 1952 from Georges Braque: “Since 1906, when we exhibited together at the Indépendants exhibition in the Salle des Fauves, you have charted a unique course that is by no means easy.” Excerpt from a letter dated 27 January 1956 from Pablo Picasso: “My dear Béla Czóbel, I remember your works well from the Independents’ exhibition in the Salle des Fauves at the Salon d’Automne.”
