Description:
The Porsche 911 Carrera 3.0 occupies a unique and deliberately understated position in the 911’s history. Produced exclusively in the 1976 and 1977 model years, with fewer than 3,687 units across all body styles — including 2,564 coupés and 1,123 Targas — it stands in stark contrast to the mass-produced models that would follow: 58,000 units for the 911 SC, 76,500 for the Carrera 3.2. Rarity is not merely a marketing ploy here; it is an integral part of the model.
Sold exclusively in Europe – with no official imports to the United States – the Carrera 3.0 embodies two of the brand’s major lineages: it inherits the sporting DNA of the 911 Carrera 2.7 RS, introduced in 1972, and adopts the 2,993 cm³ aluminium engine from the 911 Turbo 3.0 (930), lightened by the six-bolt flywheel and crankshaft from the 2.7 RS. It is also the first 911 to feature a fully galvanised body.
Mechanically, the design is remarkable: in the absence of a turbocharger, Porsche increased the compression ratio and optimised the Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection system to extract 200 chevaux and 255 Nm of torque at 4,200 tr/min from an engine whose reliability is now recognised by experts. On the road, the Carrera 3.0 improves on the lap times of the legendary 2.7 RS: 6.3 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h, and two tenths of a second faster from 0 to 180 km/h.
Vehicle history:
First registered in Germany on 4 November 1976, this coupé is a 1977 model (chassis number 9117600346). It remained in German ownership for eight years. In 1985, the tuning firm RUF – the gold standard in the Porsche world – increased the engine capacity to 3.2 litres, boosting power to 220 chevaux. The engine remains ‘matching numbers’; workshop documents and period photographs from the RUF workshop are included in the file.
The car was subsequently exported to the United States via the port of Houston, with a declared mileage of 85,000 km (53,000 miles), accompanied by all the relevant US customs documentation. It had four successive owners in the United States, whose title deeds are included in the file.
In 2014, the current owner undertook a complete and meticulous restoration. The bodywork was stripped down to the bare metal, revealing no signs of accident damage or structural modifications. Nor had the colour been changed: the car left the factory in Indischrot, and that is the colour it has been restored to. More than 300 hours of bodywork, carried out by professionals, preceded a total of 2,300 hours of work.
All metal parts – front suspension, stabiliser bar, fuel tank, oil sump, heater housings, engine mounts and wheel mounts – were degreased, sandblasted and repainted before reassembly. The braking system has been completely overhauled (calipers, discs, pads), the four wheel bearings replaced, the electrical system serviced, the hoses replaced and the engine insulation restored. The exhaust system has been replaced with a Scart Riva stainless steel unit featuring a pre-silencer, for a distinctive sound. The engine is fitted with hydraulic chain tensioners. Following the repainting, wax was injected into the hollow sections and the underbody was treated with protective coating.
The brakes have recently been serviced (calipers, discs, pads). The car is presented in a condition consistent with the restoration.
