Description
Léopold GAUTRAIT (1865–1937). A charming and rare 18K gold necklace (750/1000), hallmarked with an eagle’s head, comprising a chain and a pendant that can be converted into a brooch, richly chased with a sunflower and foliage motifs, the background featuring openwork plique-à-jour enamelling in a gradient effect, set with a rose-cut diamond of approximately 0.50 ct. Signed ‘L. GAUTRAIT’ on the reverse, numbered 507 on the bail. Master’s hallmark of Léon GARIOD (LG) on the chain clasp. Art Nouveau period. Dimensions of the brooch or pendant: 4.5 x 4 cm. Necklace length 43 cm. Gross weight 31.8 g. (The pin of the brooch is probably an added piece; the ring or clasp for the chain is missing). In a case with a damaged hinge, marked ‘PAUL HAMELIN, Joaillier-Bijoutier, 23 rue de la Paix, Paris’ (Gold Medal 1878). Long mistakenly attributed to “Lucien” Gautrait in prestigious catalogues, the rare signature “L. Gautrait’ is in fact that of Léopold Gautrait (1865–1937), one of the most brilliant chasers and modellers of the Art Nouveau period. Gautrait practised his craft in the workshop of Léon Gariod, the official supplier to leading Parisian jewellers such as Vever and Boucheron. An extremely rare occurrence at the time: recognising the genius of his employee, an undisputed virtuoso of plique-à-jour enamel and the Symbolist bestiary, Gariod granted him the privilege of affixing his own hallmark to his creations.
