Description
VARAGES or MOUSTIERS. A rare pair of wall-mounted earthenware flower vases with polychrome decoration. The bulbous body is centred on a medallion, formed of foliage and shells, set against a fully openwork latticework background and punctuated with pendants. The sides, also openwork, feature scrollwork and rest on three strongly curved feet. The removable lids are topped with a comb-cut motif and adorned with flowering stems and garlands of medallions that emphasise the openwork decoration. 18th century. 30 x 25 x 13 cm. A similar piece, though a single item, is held at the Varages Earthenware Museum.
