PIE Jean (Joan), Spanish sculptor (Vilabella 1890 – Grigny 1977). Large woodcarving in direct carving technique, depicting women in profile at prayer, signed “J. Pié’ in the bottom right-hand corner, 54 x 102 cm This Catalan artist was particularly active in France during the 1920s and 1930s, with his synthetic and stylised style. He collaborated notably with the Sèvres porcelain factory. He was also a friend, pupil and close collaborator of Francisco Durrio, and these works reflect the most characteristic features of the latter’s work. The Bilbao Museum has several sculptures by Jean Pié on display.
