Emmanuel Frémiet was a Parisian sculptor who was both a nephew and pupil of Rude. He made his debut at the Salon with a "Gazelle", a plaster study. He went on to win numerous medals, and from then on was ranked among the master sculptors. Napoleon III commissioned a collection of statuettes of the various arms of the French army. Accustomed to animal subjects, "St Michel terrassant le dragon" (St Michael slaying the dragon) is a departure from the beaten track, revealing his academic concern for resemblance and appropriateness.
