VERLAINE (Paul). *Sagesse*. Paris: Société Générale de Librairie Catholique, Palmé, 1881. In 8°, half-morocco with corner pieces, gilt fillets on the covers, ribbed spine, very slightly faded, decorated with double gilt panels, date at the foot, gilt head, covers preserved with a label from the publisher Vannier’s distributor (bound by Mercier, successor to his father, 1927). (Bound by Mercier, successor to his father, 1927). [3 ff.], II, 106 pp. FIRST EDITION. ‘A very rare volume, printed in an edition of 600 copies, including 100 author’s copies, which Vannier bought back at a pittance and put back on sale with a blank label bearing his name (Carteret, II, 420). Prison poems and final masterpiece This collection of 47 poems was originally to be titled *Cellulairement*, as it contains poems written in prison by Verlaine, who served a two-year prison sentence for shooting Rimbaud. On his return to Paris after a long stay in London, punctuated by visits to France, he persuaded Palmé to publish it in return for an advance of 600 francs. During those two years, he had rediscovered the faith of his childhood, but *Sagesse* in fact contains only seven pieces of Catholic inspiration. Bound at the top: Autograph signed letter to Léon Vanier. 1 p. in-8. Regarding a second edition of *Sagesse* (Vanier published a second edition of the book in 1899).
