Description
A flat, rectangular centre desk made of mahogany and mahogany veneer. The overhanging top is edged with a bronze moulding and upholstered in fawn-coloured leather. It features three drawers running along the base; the central one is operated by a push-button, whilst those at either end are set in slightly recessed compartments. Three similar decorative drawers are situated on the visitor’s side. The piece is adorned with chiselled and gilded bronze ornamentation on the drawer handles, featuring a design of baskets of flowers within a double frame of volutes, and on the central panels of the drawers, depicting a frieze of putti (an allegory of Music) playing with a dog, a book, a lyre, a bagpipe, a pan flute, baskets of flowers and a fire. At the corners, the vertical uprights are accented with ribbon-wrapped garlands overhanging a laurel torus which marks the start of the tapered, sheathed legs. These are edged with mouldings running down to the acanthus-leaf feet and finished with a band of laurel leaves.
