This artist’s book is a celebration of Paris, centred on the Faubourg St Honoré. The text reveals the city through the eyes of a learned and passionate historian, in which the Seine takes centre stage. It explores the history of the city’s monuments and neighbourhoods over the centuries through the perspectives offered by ‘The Japanese Man of Montparnasse’. The glamorous Paris, the hard-working Paris, the erotic Paris…
The artist lived through the Belle Époque and the Roaring Twenties, rubbing shoulders with the greatest artists at the famous cafés Le Select and La Coupole. He was one of those who shaped the image of Paris that the whole world knows, and with good reason: as well as being famous in his own right, he rubbed shoulders with all the celebrities of his time.
Amedeo Modigliani and Chaïm Soutine were his immediate neighbours at the Cité Falguière, and he developed a close friendship with them. He met Pablo Picasso the very day after his return from Japan. His other artistic acquaintances included Henri Matisse, Fernand Léger, Juan Gris, Moïse Kisling, Jules Pascin, Ossip Zadkine, Kees van Dongen, Maurice Utrillo and Marie Laurencin.
Foujita was an eccentric dandy, much sought after in avant-garde intellectual and literary circles. He regularly socialised with figures such as Jean Cocteau, Guillaume Apollinaire, Max Jacob and Blaise Cendrars. He also associated with Robert Desnos, the future partner of Youki, Foujita’s ex-wife, as well as Colette and André Gide. Among the composers, Maurice Ravel, Francis Poulenc and Darius Milhaud were part of his circle. A regular at fancy dress balls and high-society soirées, he spent his nights at La Rotonde, Le Dôme or La Coupole in the company of Kiki de Montparnasse, the legendary model for his nudes against a milky-white background, and the Surrealist photographer Man Ray.
His acquaintances also included Joséphine Baker, Charlie Chaplin, Maurice Chevalier and Mistinguett. His inner circle comprised his muses and companions: Fernande Barrey, Lucie Badoud (whom he renamed Youki),
