[MANUSCRIT]. Psalter-Lectionary of the Office (Winter Part (Pars hiemalis)) (Use of the friars preachers [Dominicans]). In Latin, ornate manuscript on parchment. Germany (Rhineland), or Alsace, circa 1425-1450. 314 ff, missing at the beginning and end of the manuscript, text copied on a single column, ruled in brown ink (justification: 63 x 103 mm), liturgical Gothic script in dark brown ink, a few advertisements (e.g. ff. 121v, 133v, 145v, 205v, 255v), headings in red, numerous small initials painted in red and blue, larger initials two lines high in red or blue with watermarked decoration in red, green or blue, usually with ascending and descending "bands of I", very large initials 3 to 7 lines high marking the main divisions of the text (ff. 4v, 15, 25, 34v, 46v, 57v, 70, 117v, 138, 144v, 262, 263v) with puzzle decoration in red and blue, with grotesque motifs, vegetal motifs enhanced with green and yellow, decoration of filigree motifs in mauve and red ink, sometimes with grotesques. Contemporary binding, wooden boards covered with pink-tinted sow skin, spine with 3 exposed nerves, leather fastening and brass clasp, discolouration of the leather on the spine and the joins (a few wormholes on the boards, a few stains on the boards, joins a little split but boards well attached, a few pieces of leather missing from the tail of the spine). Ink discharges on the upper flyleaf (no counter-guards). Size of binding: 142 x 100 mm; size of leaves: 135 x 95 mm. Provenance: Manuscript copied for monastic use (office lectionary) and more specifically for Dominican use. Stylistically, the ornate initials are reminiscent of manuscripts produced in the Rhineland and Alsace. - 2 Inscribed on the verso of fol. 313: "Caspardus Schümachen. 1643". This manuscript is a lectionary for the Office. It contains the readings from biblical, patristic and homiletical texts that are to be given at the Office during the liturgical year, from Christmas (heading: In natali dei, fol. 116), Epiphany, Septuagesima [the period of approximately 70 days preceding Easter] (fol. 184), to the Lenten fast [Quadragésime] (In capite ieiunii, fol. 207v). It is preceded by a liturgical Psalter (ff. 1-104v): we are therefore dealing with a composite liturgical manuscript of the type Psalter-Lectionary of the Office. A Dominican origin is deduced from the presence of an office for Saint Dominic (see fol. 307v) and also from the work carried out on the Sanctoral of the Lectionary of the Dominican Office. The present manuscript, while not including all the saints, follows the outline of the Sanctoral of the Lectionary of the Dominican Office drawn up in 1254-1256 by Humbert de Romans: Stephanus, Johannes, Sylvester, Innocentes, Felix, Maurus, Marcellus, Fabianus, Agnes, Vincentius, Conversio sancti Pauli, Scholastica, Valentinus, Dominicus. See Ecole des chartes, Urfels-Capot, A.-E. "Le sanctoral du lectionnaire de l'office dominicain, 1254-1256", Proprium de sanctis, pars hiemalis (winter section). This thesis proposes an edition of the sanctoral, based on the thirteenth-century manuscript copied in Paris at the Convent of the Rue Saint-Jacques, which includes the lectionary of the Office of the Friars Preachers, "prototype of the liturgy of the Friars Preachers (Rome, Convent of Santa Sabina, XIV L1: Iste est liber lectionarius ordinis fratrum predicatorum, diligenter compilatus et correctus et punctatus et versiculatus...). The present manuscript is part of this Dominican liturgical tradition. Note in the present manuscript the Office for Saint Thomas Aquinas (heading fol. 81: "In festo sancto Thome de Aquino", a Dominican saint canonised in 1323), an Office for Saint Emérentienne or Emérance (fol. 255v), the milk sister of Saint Agnes (fol. 246v) [here the Roman saint, but it should be remembered that Saint Agnes of Montepulciano was particularly honoured by the Dominicans]. Finally, the readings for the Office of the Virgin (ff. 104v-116) follow Dominican usage. Text: ff. 1-104v, Liturgical Psalter, with Psalm 20, followed by Psalm 21 and following, up to Psalm 147 [missing the beginning, certainly with the "Beatus vir..." and the first 20 psalms], followed by prayers. ff. 104v-116, Office of the Virgin (Dominican usage), rubric, Cursus de sancta maria; with lauds, antiphona, Post partum, capitulum, Ego quasi vitis, hymnus, O gloriosa dei genitrix (fol. 109v); prime, hymnus, Memento salutis; antiphona, Dignare me; capitulum, Ab initio et ante (fol. 111); none, antiphona, Beata mater, capitulum, Quasi cedrus (fol. 112); Antiphona super Magnificat, Sancta Maria succurre (fol. 113). ff. 116-211v, Lectionary of the Office, Winter section, Proprium de Tempore, from Christmas to the Lenten fast [Quadragésime]. ff. 211v-289, Office Lectionary, Proprium de sanctis (pars hiemalis) ff. 289-313, Office Lectionary, Commune de sanctis.
