Fine manuscript containing the charter of confirmation of nobility in Spanish, issued by Philip II of Spain to Sebastian Nuñes through the Chancellery of Granada in 1577. The Spanish term "reales cartas ejecutorias" (enforceable royal letters) refers to legal documents issued by the Spanish authorities containing the resolution of legal proceedings, including criminal cases, land disputes and claims to nobility status. Cartas ejecutorias are issued by the monarch himself, using his image and name, but they are documents that resulted from legal disputes - often lasting for several decades - involving witnesses. The term used for these proceedings is "pleito" (or pleyto in our document). The result of these "pleitos" was "royal and final" and therefore supposed to be "executed" quickly, hence the name "cartas ejecutorias". A key document in Spain, the Carta executoria de hidalguia is a first-rate source for researchers, genealogists and heraldists, containing a wealth of information on a wide range of social, material, economic and iconographic issues. Sebastian Nunez (or Nuñes) was a resident of the town of Aldea del Rey, in the province of Ciudad Real, in the region of Castilla-La Mancha. The town was protected by Philip II, who had the Palacio de la Clavería built there to house the Claveros of the Order of Calatrava, who guarded the castle and the convent of the utmost importance. Illustration: Two large full-page illuminated compositions facing each other, decorated with two borders with rinceaux and putti motifs, one with the name "Don Philipe" [King Philip II of Spain] in a cartouche, the other with a coat of arms. f. 1v, Anonymous, Composition showing King Philip II and Anne of Austria, Queen Consort, kneeling in prayer with the Virgin and Child in heaven (the Virgin is holding a pomegranate). The name "Don Philipe" appears in a cartouche below the illuminated composition. In 1577, the King of Spain was Philip II (1527-1598), the eldest son of Charles V. Married for a time to Maria Manuela of Portugal, Philip II married Mary Tudor (died 1558), Queen of England and Ireland, and by her marriage Queen Consort of Spain, Sicily and Naples, Duchess of Burgundy, Milan, Brabant, Luxembourg and Limburg, Countess of Flanders and Hainaut and Countess Palatine of Burgundy. After his third marriage to Elisabeth of France (1545-1568), Philip II married for a fourth time in 1570 to Anne of Austria (1549-1580), daughter of Maximilian II of the Holy Roman Empire. f. 2, Anonymous, [upper register] Santiago de Matamoros riding, attacking Moors, with "Por la Gracia de Dios" in a cartouche (Saint James known as Matamoros); [lower register], heraldic composition (Nunez family, four quarters, note the Chacón family: "1º y 4º; de plata, un lobo pasante, sable. 2º y 3º; azure, a fleur de lis de oro"). Santiago Matamoros is the name given to the representation (painting, sculpture, etc.) of the apostle James the Great, a legendary and miraculous figure who appeared at the Battle of Clavijo (23 May 844) to help the Christians in their war of conquest against the Moors: "Although this event is based on a legend, the so-called battle has provided one of the strongest ideological icons of Spanish national identity" (Jean Mitchell-Lanham).
