[BIBLE]. Lyon: Jacques Sacon; Nuremberg: Antoine Koberger, 24 July 1521. - In-folio, 350 x 248: (14 ff.), CCCXVII ff. (26 ff. first blank). Saddle leather on wooden boards, boards framed with cold roulettes of foliage and portraits, ribbed spine, leather and brass clasps, blue edges, bookmarks (contemporary binding). Delaveau-Hillard, Bibles imprimées du XVe au XVIIIe siècle, n° 794. Superb sixteenth-century illustrated Latin Bible, printed in Gothic letters in Lyon by Jacques Sacon for Anton Korberger of Nuremberg. It faithfully follows, page by page, the edition published by the latter in 1519. This edition was edited by the Italian Dominican Alberto Castellano (1450?-1523?), who had initiated the first attempt at a critical revision of the Vulgate. It also includes historical notes by the Milanese canonist and theologian Johannes de Gradibus (14..-1525?) as well as references to canon law in the margins. It is also richly illustrated with woodcuts, including two full-page compositions: the first illustrates the six days of creation (opposite folio 1), and the second depicts the Nativity (folio CCXLIV verso). There is also a mid-page engraving depicting the Garden of Eden and more than 140 woodcut vignettes, 80 of which are repeated several times. These woodcuts were mainly produced by the engraver Hans Springinklee (c. 1490-1550), a pupil of Albrecht Dürer, and the painter, draughtsman and engraver Erhard Schön (1491-1542). The title is framed by four woodcut friezes, surrounding the Lyon coat of arms and the Florentine fleur-de-lys, printed in red. This very handsome copy is bound in contemporary saddle-skin, cold-stamped on wooden boards. It has retained its two original chased brass clasps, but the umbilicus and bouillons (corner irons) are missing. The boards are decorated with friezes of foliage and portraits, notably of biblical figures, in frames. The linings contain several notes and old bookplates. Wormholes in the binding and on several leaves, but not serious. Two corners damaged, soiling. Ink stains on folio XXVIII and on folios CLII verso and CLIII recto. Some light wetness.
