Description
[ENLUMINATION] Folio from a Martyrology (?) Suffrage in honour of Saint Domnole, bishop of Le Mans (558-581). In Latin, illuminated manuscript on parchment, late caroline script, drypoint rule, 1st line of rule written, text in two columns, 36 lines per column. France, Normandy ? 12th century. Dimensions: 353 x 220 mm Ornate initial S at the beginning of the text, a zoomorphic hybrid and scrolls drawn in pen, with watercolours in blue, red and green; text in two columns; running title: "Mensis December"; heading, "K[alendis] decembris depositio". Heading in blue: "Sancti Dompnoli episcopi Cenomacensis" (very pale ink). Initial trimmed short on left-hand side. Under the reign of Clotaire I, Saint Domnole was the head of a convent of monks in the basilica of Saint Laurent, then bishop of Le Mans in 543. His feast day is 1 December.
