North-East France, Arras, circa 1220-1230. Dimensions: 285 x 190 mm; justification: 190 x 125 mm Text in two columns (53 lines per column), headings in red, running titles in red and blue, small initials painted in red or blue with yellow highlights (letters of expectation in ink visible on the left of the painted initials), large initials in red or blue with blue or red watermarked decoration extending into the margins, historiated initial E depicting King David ringing the bells and introducing Psalm 80 "Exultate deo adiutori..." Leaf from the so-called "Chudleigh Bible", described and sold in 1953 (Sotheby's, 7 December 1953, lot 52), once owned by Baron Clifford of Chudleigh. The Bible was sold again: collection of George Armin Goyder (Sotheby's, 8 July 1970, lot 104) (see Kidd, 2021, no. 17: 53/54 lines; dimensions 285 x 190 mm). Kidd recalls Branner's research and association with the "Alexander Workshop", linked to Arras; other art historians (A. Stones) associate this artist with Tournai. Text: End of Psalm 79 [incomplete from beginning]; Psalms 80-87; beginning of Psalm 88 [incomplete from end]. See also: P. Kidd, The McCarthy Collection. French Miniatures, London, 2021, no. 17: "Three historiated initials on three leaves from the Chudleigh Bible": "Perhaps originally owned by a monastery or church, with notes in red referring to the liturgical readings of the Psalms". In the present leaf, in a cartouche drawn in blue and inscribed in red, we find: "Feria VIa [sexta]".
