Description
[ENLUMINATION] Leaf from a book of hours (Chartres usage?), Calendar (month of February). In Latin, illuminated manuscript on parchment, humanist script, cord motif around the text. France, Paris, circa 1520. Follower of Jean Pichore (active in Paris, 1490-1521). Dimensions: 162 x 106 mm The liturgical use of Chartres is suggested by the inclusion of the feast of the dedication of Notre-Dame de Chartres (17 October) in the calendar on a related sheet. The cordelière surrounding the text no doubt echoes a Franciscan devotion (the Cordeliers) or a particular devotion of the commissioner, the cordelière also being a sign of friendship and loyalty. The general aesthetic of this folio is reminiscent of works produced in the first quarter of the 16th century by artists such as Jean Pichore and members of the Étienne Colaud group. A number of related leaves from these Hours are in private collections in England: calendar, month of October; leaf from the Hours of the Virgin, none; see also Charles Puckett, Akron, Ohio, leaf from the Hours of the Holy Spirit, matins.
