Description
[MANUSCRIT]. [BOURGES] Ferial Psalter and Book of Hours, for the use of Bourges. In Latin, illuminated manuscript on parchment. France, Bourges, after 1477 (c. 1477-1500?). 202 ff, preceded and followed by 3 ff. of paper endpapers, a few gaps to be noted (one leaf missing after f. 46, f. 94, f. 106, f. 201, probably with illuminated decoration), horizontal advertisements sometimes cropped short, bastard script in brown ink, text in two columns, 23 lines of text per column, ruled in pale red ink (justification: 93 x 64 mm), headings and underlining in red, capitals highlighted in yellow, initials painted in red or blue (1 to 2 lines high), ornate line ends, two initials (3 lines high) in burnished gold on dark pink and blue backgrounds with white highlights, extensions with scrolls, gold or coloured foliage (introducing the Hours of the Cross and the Hours of the Holy Spirit), five initials (4 lines high) in burnished gold on dark pink and blue backgrounds with white highlights, extensions with burnished gold baguettes and dark pink and blue backgrounds and scroll borders with flowers, strawberries and foliage (introducing Psalms 1, 38, 52, 68, 97); the leaves after ff. 46, 94 and 106, which were intended to contain ornamentation for matins on Monday (Ps. 26), Friday (Ps. 80) and Saturday (Ps. 97)), and a drawing on fol. 42 (profile of a man); the manuscript was probably intended to contain miniatures, which is suggested by the blank leaves preceding the main texts, one of which forms an integral part of the quire and the other two are isolated. These miniatures were intended to open the psalter (f. 13), the vespers psalms (f. 122) and the Commun of Saints (f. 155). 18th century binding, 5-ribbed spine with partitions and fleurons, black morocco, gilt decoration on covers (Duseuil style), brass clasps (one clasp missing), marbled paper endpapers and countersleeves, gilt edges. Some wear to the upper cover, jaws a little fragile. Some stains to the parchment but in good condition. Size: 149 x 113 mm Provenance : 1. This manuscript was produced for the liturgical use of Bourges, as confirmed by the heading in the Commun des saints: "secundum usum bituricensis" (f. 156). This is confirmed by the list of liturgical uses for the Hours of the Virgin (ff. 188-193v) and for the Office of the Dead (ff. 195v-201), as well as the list of saints honoured in the diocese of Bourges in the calendar and litanies. In terms of dating, the inclusion in the calendar of the feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary (8 December, in red, f. 12) suggests that the manuscript was produced after 1477, the date of the Indulgence granted by Sixtus IV to those who recited the Office of the Immaculate Conception (Leroquais, Les bréviaires manuscrits..., 1934, I, p. cix) and the feast was initially included in the Franciscan calendar. In 1491, the feast was included in the Dominican calendar, and in 1496 it was widely adopted in the Roman calendar (Leroquais 1934, I, pp. ci and cxvii). In the festive psalter, the division of the psalms follows a secular custom, and is therefore designed for a secular religious, a canon or a monk of the mendicant orders. 2. In the margin of fol. 125, an inscription "Raoul 1663 le Jeune". 3. Two inscriptions: "Ludovic de Moussion" (f. 35) and the first name "Ludovic" on the recto of the third endpaper at the head of the manuscript (19th century hand). Text: ff. 1-12v, Calendar, usage of Bourges, with St. Guillaume, archbishop of Bourges (10 January, in red); St. Ursin, archbishop of Bourges (octave 5 January, 9 lessons; 29 December, in red, double feast); St. Sulpice, bishop of Bourges (octave 5 January, 9 lessons; 29 December, in red, double feast); St. Sulpice, bishop of Bourges (octave 5 January, in red, double feast).
