Description
[MANUSCRIT]. [RELIGION]. [JESUITS] Enchiridion orationum... Collection of prayers written in a Jesuit environment. In Latin and German, manuscript on parchment. Germany, 1625-1650 (necessarily after the canonisation of Saint Ignatius of Loyola and Saint Francis Xavier in 1622). 158 ff, preceded and followed by two endpapers, cursive and Roman script in brown ink, ornate title and ornate cul-de-lampe, pen-and-ink drawings. Contemporary binding in black shagreen, smooth spine, marbled paper countersleeves and endpapers, brass clasps (period binding). Size: 83 x 70 mm This small collection of prayers has been preserved in its original condition, from its binding to the texts it contains. A Jesuit origin can be deduced from the presence in the litanies of saints such as Saint Ignatius and Saint Francis Xavier, both saints honoured by the Jesuits. A close friend of Saint Ignatius of Loyola (1491-1556), Saint Francis Xavier (1506-1552), "Apostle of the Indies", was one of the co-founders of the Society of Jesus. Saint Ignatius of Loyola was also canonised by Pope Gregory XV in 1622. Text: ff. 1-21v, Prayers and title (fol. 2) : Enchiridion orationum. - ff. 22-39v, Seven penitential psalms. - ff. 40-62v, Litanies (note the importance given to Saint Francis, followed by Saint Ignatius and Saint Francis Xavier), followed by prayers. - ff. 63-63v, blank page. - ff. 64-72, Prayers and litanies for the days of the week.
