Description
CHARDIN (Jean). Voyages du chevalier Chardin, en Perse, et autres lieux de l'Orient. Amsterdam: Aux dépens de la Compagnie, 1735. - 4 volumes in-4, 247 x 202: frontispiece, (7 ff.), 390 pp. 1 map, 17 plates; (2 ff.), 359 pp. 45 plates; frontispiece, (3 ff.), 437 pp. 15 plates; (3 ff.), 324 pp. 15 ff. 1 plate. Demi-basane fauve raciné, spine ribbed and decorated (modern binding). The most complete early edition of Chardin's Voyages, a major work of the 17th century and an essential historical source on Persian culture and civilisation. Widely distributed in Europe from the early 18th century onwards, this work played a founding role in our knowledge of Persia and the Middle East, fuelling the thinking of the Enlightenment. Philosophers and writers such as Montesquieu drew on it to criticise despotic regimes, and Montesquieu used its descriptions as inspiration for his Persian Letters. It is still considered by specialists to be an extremely valuable document, and is still of great interest today for understanding Safavid Iran and its interactions with Europe. Unlike the first edition, which was discontinued in 1673, this edition contains the original text in its entirety, enriched by the Coronation of Suleiman III (published separately in 1676) and previously unpublished passages taken from the author's manuscripts and removed from previous editions. The edition is illustrated with two identical frontispieces, signed by Henri Simon Thomassin (1687-1741), located in volumes 1 and 3, a vignette on each title, 5 very fine historiated bands, a map and 78 plates, many of which are fold-outs. Copy in modest modern imitation binding. Spine slightly faded. Leaves browned, scattered foxing and occasional stains. Provenance: Handwritten note in German, dated 1848, on the old endpaper preserved in the first volume.
