ALEXANDRIAN (Sarane). Victor Brauner, the Illuminator. Paris, Éditions Cahiers d’art, 1954. In-8, paperback, cloth-bound cover. A monograph on Victor Brauner, illustrated with 18 reproductions of his works and 12 vignettes taken from the artist’s sketchbooks. A precious autographed copy signed by the author and dedicated to André Breton: ‘For André Breton, despite everything that now separates us, in memory of everything that once united us.’ In 1947, Alexandrian met Breton, who made him one of his close collaborators. Their partnership was, however, short-lived. In 1948, the Matta affair erupted: Breton expelled Roberto Matta from the Surrealist group, accusing him of having an affair with Arshile Gorky’s wife, who committed suicide that year. Alexandrian, alongside Victor Brauner, refused to accept this expulsion, believing that Surrealism should not turn into a court of law. This disagreement led to his break with Breton and his departure from the group. Yet this break never diminished Alexandrian’s admiration for Breton. This copy is accompanied by two autograph letters signed by the author, one dated March 1947 (8 pp. in-12, in blue ink, with envelope), the other from February 1968 (3½ pp., in-4, in green ink, with envelope). The edges of the cover are slightly yellowed.
