This copy features an autograph dedication by the author on the half-title page: ‘To Valentine Hugo, to coax the toucan, but also with my respectful friendship, Aragon’, and a second dedication by Valentine Hugo addressed to Suzanne Muzard, André Breton’s beloved, on the half-title page: ‘Dear Suzanne, Aragon once had lunch at my home at the Palais Royal in 1931, and my magnificent toucan was hardly amiable towards him; indeed, he was amiable only towards me. The toucan’s time is past, as is Aragon’s ‘time of cherries’—naturally. Your friend Valentine 17-5-61”.
