BATAILLE (Georges). *L'Anus solaire*. Paris, Galerie Simon, 1931. Small quarto, paperback. First edition of Bataille’s first book. Illustrated with three drypoint engravings by André Masson. A rare and exceptional copy, one of the 10 special editions printed on antique Japanese paper from the imperial paper mills, bearing the author’s signature in violet ink on the margin. Written in 1927 and published in 1931, *L’Anus solaire* is one of Georges Bataille’s seminal works, in which the major themes of his oeuvre are already evident: eroticism, the sacred, transgression and violence. The work marks the continuation of the intense collaboration between Georges Bataille and André Masson, a few months before the founding of the journal *Documents*, edited by Bataille and to which Masson would become one of the principal contributors.
