Description
BATAILLE (Georges). *Madame Edwarda*. Twelve copper plates engraved using drypoint and burin by Hans Bellmer. Paris, Georges Visat, 1965. Folio, loose-leaf, with the publisher’s cover, folder and mauve slipcase. An illustrated edition featuring 12 copperplate engravings executed in drypoint and burin by Hans Bellmer, including a frontispiece, a colophon vignette and 10 large compositions.
One of 150 copies on Rives vellum, numbered in Arabic numerals (no. 76), with the 12 original engravings signed by Hans Bellmer.
Written by Georges Bataille during the Occupation, *Madame Edwarda* was first published under the pseudonym Pierre Angélique in 1941, before a second edition, revised and illustrated by Jean Fautrier (under the pseudonym Jean Perdu), appeared in 1945.
Bellmer originally produced the engravings in 1955 for the third edition published by Jean-Jacques Pauvert; however, they remained unpublished until this 1965 edition, printed on the hand-cranked presses of Éditions Georges Visat. The typography, inspired by Bellmer’s layout, is the work of Féquet and Baudier.
Minor pinholes; case slightly stained.
