First edition illustrated with an original etching by Salvador Dalí, printed as a separate plate. One of 100 copies printed on Holland van Gelder paper, the only ones – along with the 16 first-edition copies – to be signed by both authors on the colophon and to contain Salvador Dalí’s original engraving as a frontispiece. Autograph dedication by Paul Éluard in blue ink on the half-title page: Copy for Michel Fardoulis-Lagrange. “Think of me as I speak to you; put yourself in my place to reply.” With my admiration and friendship, Paul Éluard. Michel Fardoulis-Lagrange (1910–1994) was one of the most enigmatic French poets of the 20th century. Praised by Antonin Artaud, Georges Bataille, Paul Éluard and Michel Leiris, he was a sort of ‘cursed’ figure whose work is still waiting to be truly discovered. Traces of engraving, cover slightly scuffed. Dali and Books, p. 88.
