Description
"Ecclesiae Militantis Triumphi" (17th century)
The Church and the Triumph of Glorious Martyrs (The series entitled "Triumphs of the Church Militant", depicting Christian martyrs under the reign of several Roman emperors, was first published in 1585 and included 32 prints engraved by Giovanni Battista de Cavalieri depicting in detail the martyrdoms of various saints).
Our composite collection, from a later edition, contains around 37 plates, several of which are late editions and some of which are duplicates.
There is a reprint or reinterpretation of the engravings in this collection by Jan van HAELBECK (active in Paris from 1600 to 1630). He is known to have worked on numerous publication projects. Some of these creations were original. Others were regravings of previously published popular works. An example of the latter is the publication "Ecclesiae Militantis Triumphi", published by Jean Leclerc in Paris in the early 1600s.
