Born into a Roman aristocratic family and trained for the post of Consul, Lepri turned to art in 1942. A great admirer of his partner Léonor Fini, his work takes on a metaphysical dimension, featuring monstrous figures whilst retaining a profound sense of humanity. Thus, the figure of the dwarf—the riding instructor in this painting—plays an important role. He is never portrayed as monstrous, but rather introduces the fantastical into reality. Lepri’s paintings, which he himself described as ‘ultramondi metafisici’, are labyrinthine and critical worlds, sources of various truths that elude all rational inquiry.
