From the early 1950s onwards, Sayed Haider Raza explored the links between France and India, his country of origin. Upon his arrival in Paris, he moved away from expressive figurative art to embrace abstract painting, in which form is perceptible only through the title. The great intensity of his artistic vocabulary, combined with his profound sensitivity, brings his approach closer to that of Mark Rothko (Laurent Le Bon, in *Sayed Haider Raza*, Mapin Publishing, 2023, p. 10). His spiritual abstraction is reinforced by his gradual return to his native culture, which he fully embraced at the turn of the 1980s. The reds, ochres, greens and blues are in keeping with the colour palette of Rajput miniatures, whilst exploring natural elements. Black is a direct reference to Indian identity, as the ‘mother colour’.
Painted in 200, this painting bears witness to the evolution of his art, moving “towards consonance, harmony and peace, not only of colours, but also of the spirit” (translated from Ashok Vajpeyi, Raza: A Life in Art, New Delhi, Art Alive Gallery, 2007, p. 128).
