MAP OF THE HOLY LAND BY J. TIRINUS – “Chorographia Terrae sanctae in Augustiorem formam redacta et ex varis auctoribus a multis erroribus expurgata”, by Jacobus Tirinus. 17th century. Illustrated engraved map. Printed on two joined sheets (laid paper with a star watermark). Legend in Latin. At the bottom, there is an oval plan of ancient JERUSALEM and vignettes of sacred objects: a menorah, the Ark of the Covenant, the altar of sacrifice, the Tabernacle, as well as a plan and elevations of the Temple, etc... in the borders. In the centre is a bird’s-eye view of ancient Jerusalem, based on the work of the Spanish biblical geographer Juan Bautista Vilalpando. Margins. 38 x 105 cm. Condition A/B (folded, a few faint fox’s spots and short tears in the margins, the top and left edges of the sheet sun-faded, small handling creases in the right-hand margin, otherwise in good overall condition).
