Description
LOUIS XIV – “Meeting between Louis XIV, King of France and Navarre, and PHILIP IV, King of Spain, on the Isle of the Pheasants in the year MDCLX, for the ratification of the peace and for the celebration of the marriage of His Most Christian Majesty to MARIE THERESE of Austria, Infanta of Spain”. 1728. Etching and burin engraving by Edme JEAURAT (1688–1738), after Charles LE BRUN. Final state proof, with letter, on laid paper. Published by Jeaurat, in Paris. Narrow margins. This print reproduces a tapestry woven at the Gobelins Manufactory based on drawings by its first director, Charles Le Brun. This tapestry was part of a series entitled ‘Histoire du Roi’ (‘History of the King’), which commemorated the early triumphs of Louis XIV’s reign. The meeting of 7 June 1660 served to seal the peace of the Treaty of the Pyrenees and to formalise the marriage of Louis XIV to the Infanta Maria Theresa of Austria, daughter of the King of Spain. 41.5 x 57.8 cm. Condition B (a few light foxing spots on the reverse, some old restorations, margins slightly dusty, subject in good condition).
