Description
Alexis PEYROTTE (1699–1769) (after) – Alfred ROBAUT ‘The Council of the Monkeys, or The Politicians in the Tuileries Garden’. DRAWING traced from the oil painting by Peyrotte. A tracing formerly mounted on vellum, on which the following annotation is written in ink at the bottom: “I could just as easily have created my own gouache on the same subject, but as this is far superior in every respect, I am keeping it – especially as it is a family heirloom.” Traced from the oil painting by Peyrotte – the painting belongs to Mr Le François Rouey (?) 1890–91 / I am transferring it via the aforementioned to the Carnavalet Museum at the end of February 1894”. The painting was donated to the Musée Carnavalet by A. ROBAUT in 1894. 30.5 x 40.5 cm for the subject (tracing). 33.8 x 43.8 cm including the backing. Condition A (a few foxing spots on the edges, otherwise in good condition).
